Why one level a day beats marathon sessions
Marathon puzzle sessions feel productive and fade fast: binge ten levels tonight and you will not touch the game for a week. A daily minimum of one level does the opposite:
- It's completable on your worst day. Two minutes with coffee counts as success.
- Skill compounds. Daily contact with the game's logic keeps your board-reading sharp; long gaps reset it.
- It protects the fun. A habit that demands little never becomes a chore, which is what kills casual games.
Good streaks vs predatory streaks
| Design choice | Good version | Predatory version |
|---|---|---|
| Daily ask | One small win | Escalating daily grind |
| Missing a day | Streak resets, best streak stays | Buy a "streak freeze" or lose everything |
| Reminders | Optional, polite, one per day | Aggressive, unkillable notifications |
| Rewards | Milestone bonuses at set days | Rewards only at huge milestones you'll "pay" to reach |
How OutTheyGo's streak works
OutTheyGo, a free color escape puzzle game, uses the good version of every row above:
- One won level a day extends your streak. Any level, any difficulty: a two-minute win counts.
- Milestones at days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 pay out bonus hints and revives, with richer rewards at the higher tiers (day 30 grants a pile of both).
- Your best streak is permanent. Break a 12-day streak and the record stays on your profile while the current counter restarts.
- An optional evening reminder warns you before the day ends, and it's off by default until you finish your first level. Turn it off any time in settings.
- A 35-day activity grid on the streak screen shows your month at a glance, which is the part people actually enjoy.
Because streak rewards are hints and revives, which merely save time, the streak never becomes pay-to-maintain: playing one honest level per day is always enough.
FAQ
What happens if I miss a day in OutTheyGo?
Your current streak resets to zero, but your longest streak record stays. Milestones can be earned again in the next cycle, so nothing is permanently lost.
Can I turn the streak reminder off?
Yes. The reminder is optional from the start and can be disabled in Settings or in iOS notification settings at any time.
Does the streak require winning, or just playing?
Winning one level per day. Starting a level is not enough, but any level counts, including a quick early-board win.
